Season end at the powder department at Stubai Glacier/Camp#4

Just like last year, the Stubai Glacier and its Powder Department showed off with fresh snow and sunshine right in time for our very last Volkl Split & Freeride Camp 2015 presented by Blue Tomato

On April 30th, 2015, splitboarders from all over the globe traveled to the Stubaital for another exciting late season adventure at Stubai Glacier. After checking in at the cosy apartments of the Hotel Stubaierhof Neustift´s Fuxhof on thursday afternoon, the riders met up at the Freeridecenter Stubai. Pia and I welcomed everybody with a great load of demo stuff and goodies from Volkl and Blue Tomato. During the camp, all participants could not only try out the Volkl Snowboards Untrac Splitboard, but also test the latest ABS backpacks, Ortovox safety gear, Deeluxe freeride boots and Marker helmets and goggles. After an intense hardware-coaching-and-individual-adjustment-session, the entire crew was set. Mountain guide Patrick Ribis presented his actual tour planning for the next days and after a delicious dinner at the Hotel Stubaierhof Neustift everybody disappeared in their apartments early to be up for some great touring the next morning.

Friday´s wake-up call was scheduled for 6.00 a.m. and all campers had enough time for the breakfast buffet. At 8.00 a.m. sharp, the mountain guides Patrick, Dominik and Hannes were awaiting the crew at the bottom station of Stubai Glacier.

The Powder Department of Stubai Glacier welcomed all riders with some fresh snow and great warm-up runs in wintery conditions. After some fun offpiste-runs, the crew split their boards and skinned up to the top station of the Daunjoch lift, which was not running this late in the season any more. The reward was a great run all the way down to the bottom station of Gamsgarten. Since the visibility had become worse, the crew decided to take it easy on the first day and go down early to enjoy coffee, cake and the wellness facilities at the hotel before dinner. It had already started snowing in the afternoon and fresh powder and bluebird were on the forecast for Saturday, so Friday was another early night for everyone.

Same procedure as every day, wake-up call at 6.00 a.m., breakfast at the hotel and meeting the mountain guides at 8.00 a.m. at the bottom station of Stubai Glacier. While driving up to the glacier we knew it already! This day was going to be one of the few epic days of the season with bluebird and fresh powder! Divided in three groups of different riding levels all seventeen campers had a blast, shredding fresh powder and drawing first lines in the morning.

Due to spring times with higher temperatures and rising avalanche danger, we called it a day in the afternoon and gathered all three groups at the Dresdner Huette for a cosy get-together with red wine and traditional austrian food in sun. It was Rodney, who finally did what everybody was secretly waiting for. He accidentally pulled his ABS avalanche airbag system of his backpack right on the sun terasse ..-schnaps was on him, of course! After dinner the group even made it to the Dorfpub for „one“ drink.

Even on Sunday, the alarm was set for 6.00 a.m. No biggie, everybody was ready to ride at 08.00 a.m. at the bottom station of the glacier. Due to the high temperatures of the previous days, the avalanche danger was already high in the early morning and and touring was not really an option with these conditions. So the three groups decided to take it easy and cruise around the Powder Department without touring in the morning. Risk management, safety workshops and avalanche awareness were on the schedule on Sunday afternoon. Everybody had the chance to improve their technique in probing, shoveling and transceiver search at the Ortovox Training Park. After another great day all participants met at the Freeridecenter Stubai to return their gear and have a last coffee before hitting the road home to Holland, Switzlerland, Germany and Austria.

The best comes last! We are stoked on such an amazing season ender with a great crew, amazing vibes, cool splitboarding and good conditions in the beginning of May at Stubai Glacier!

Special thanks to Stubai Glacier, the Hotel Stubaierhof Neustift and Freeridecenter Stubai for supporting the Volkl Split & Freeride Camps!  And big up to the splitboarders of our most international last camp in 2015!
